EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LOS ANGELES
nightlife.entertainment.news.shopping.dining.sports.etc...

Hot Hot Hot!

October 2008 has become Los Angeles' hottest in history. Because of the heat-trapping effects of urban development and global warming, L.A. has been getting progressively warmer. Entering this week, the average had been 84.3 and the National Weather Service was forecasting cooler days. But instead, it just got hotter: 94 degrees on Tuesday, 90 on Wednesday and 84 on Thursday. By 11:47 a.m. today, downtown had hit 81 degrees. It's almost November...I should be breaking out the scarf, not the bikini.

Nic's in Beverly Hills has everything a girl could ask for. Carleton Watkins at The Getty

Anyone that really knows Kandyce with a K knows that I love museums, aquariums, plays, etc. So now that the fires are contained, I'm planning on heading over to the Getty Museum for one of their newest exhibits, Dialogue among Giants: Carleton Watkins and the Rise of Photography in California.
Carleton Watkins, a South American native, lived a life of photography that is key to California history. The photographs he left behind display his personal vision of the birth and growth of California. Watkins is best known for his photographs of nature in Yosemite as well as the Pacific Coast. Watkins photographed the Monterey Peninsula in the 1880s, recording the continuously unfolding progression of the scenery along Seventeen-Mile Drive, which began and ended at the Hotel Del Monte. Near the hotel, Watkins created this image of a native cypress—windblown and with its roots exposed—clinging to the side of a rocky cliff.

Gorgeous.

Blue on Blue at The Avalon...Haunted!

OK, so Blue on Blue at The Avalon isn't really haunted, but they are offering some hauntingly good drinks to celebrate Halloween like the Massacre Martini made with vodka, Kahlua, butterscotch schnapps, whipped cream topping, and raspberry puree drizzle to give the “bloody” effect. Not to mention the Green Goblin made with Van Gogh chocolate vodka, Godiva white chocolate and green creme menthe. Yum!

The Blue on Blue bar is a popular, yet low-key, Beverly Hills poolside hangout that offers daily flavors of martinis as well as the popular favorites: The Blue Avalon, The Librarian's Martini, The Sex Kitten (*meow*), The Key Lime Pie, and A Walk in Space. Poolside cabanas with privacy curtains (*wink*) are available by reservation; three are for dining and three for cocktails. Book at least three weeks in advance.

But for now, swing by the bar before your Halloween festivities this year. The spooky specialty drinks are only available from October 30th to November 1st.

L.A. Lemonade's @ El Cholo's

Combination #1 with a chicken and cheese enchilada and a chicken taco; is El Cholo's most requested entree along side the L.A. Lemonade. This dim Spanish floral restaurant on Western Ave., upgraded with mini flat-screen t.v.'s in the bar area for you NFL fans, has great service, great food, and strong memorable drinks. This place was built on many memories of meeting girlfriends on lunch breaks, and random weekend excursions leading here. Definitely kid friendly, but singles and introverts, arrive before 4 pm to beat the rush.
Also, this Monday, October 27th, celebrate El Cholo's 85th Anniversary as they honor Teachers, Police Officers, and Firefighters at their Hero's Event. Show proper i.d. and your entree is free! Click on the title link for special events for proof. Let them know L.A. Etc sent you.

Pasta Roma...Late Night Pasta

I'm usually faced with many challenges daily. And of one them is dinner. No one in their right mind can cook every night, so what do you do? Fast food, Papa Johns? Trojans fans, if you're near USC or downtown L.A., Pasta Roma, a quaint Italian dine-in or take-out restaurant, is open 'till 10pm on weeknights. I am in love with the made to order pasta, you can change it up however you like. I usually get the Penne Pesto Pasta with chicken. But, they have an endless menu of soup and salads, pastas, pizzas, calzones, sandwiches...and even dessert. Top it off with the garlic rolls....
And, Monday through Fridays from 11p-2p, its your choice of pasta, pizza, or salad and medium drink for only $5.99*

Yamashiro...Welcome to the "House of Yes"

A Japanese paradise, Yamashiro: A CalAsian Cuisine, is still one thee top rated restaurants winning accolades for best ambiance, best service, best value for your buck, and the overall dining experience, (in my opinion, the best date restaurant in the city)...
We love to go for dinner just before sunset, and have wine, Yama Rockin' crunchy rolls and prepare our journey to the buzzing Hollywood nightlife down below. Somehow by traveling up this winding slope on Sycamore (just off Franklin and La Brea), you lose your concept of time and opt to stay longer enjoying Garden court, forcing your senses to travel to the Chaniwa tea gardens.
Plenty of dining areas, try the Sunset Room, Garden Court, Skyview Room, or even the bar area. This place is breathtaking, especially at nightfall. So, light your cigars and ladies double up on the martini's, you'll be here into the wee hours of the morning.
Did I mention that Yamashiro is perfect for weddings? *wink* The Restaurant buyout will impress 1000 of your closest friends...and in-laws. Take a look at the Bridal Suite.

Miguel will be performing live beginning at 9pm. There is a $5 cover charge. Unfortunately, the 1/2 off bottle service and $3 martinis was only for Prohibition Live Jazz Sundays. But don't let that stop your bottle poppin'. They have a really impressive bottle service menu.

B-Fly

The Game was scheduled to perform alongside Musiq and Ice Cube at the BET Hip Hop Awards filmed in Atlanta which aired last night. He missed his performance because his sister, up and coming rapper B-Fly, was shot during a drive-by. B-Fly was grazed by a bullet as she stood on the porch of her Compton home on October 14th. Word is that she will be ok, but The Game still chose to skip the awards to be with his fam.

B-Fly had this to say on her Myspace page: "...I truly believe in God!!! He has granted me another day at life, another day to love, another day to breathe, another day to bounce back, and another day to praise Him for life....I had so much to complain about until this brush with death surfaced but now I know that everything in my life has its purpose and place...“Death is more universal than life; everyone dies but not everyone lives.”
...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes. This is my wish for you: Comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence for when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth, love to complete your life. Perhaps our eyes need to be washed by our tears once in a while, so that we can see life with a clearer view again. Sometimes it's the smallest decisions that can change your life forever."

If her raps are as profound and humbling as her words, I am now her biggest fan. If she can wish her shooter rainbows to follow the clouds, I can forgive the lady that cut me off this morning on La Cienega.
Stop the violence peeps. It's senseless.

Hush...Half-Off Bottle Service & $3 Martinis

HUSH is a hip lounge with a fine dining menu, notable wine selection, and LIVE music. Formerly 86, a basement cabaret inspired by speak-easies of the Prohibition era (it was actually a speak-easy in the 1920s), Hush Lounge is a "secret" underground bar away from all the chaos of Hollywood Blvd. Hush exudes '20s soul, with dim lighting, marbled bathrooms, black and gold decor, and leather couches. Hush retains the elegance and glam of Hollywood's past. Their Prohibition Live Jazz Sundays offer $3 organic martinis, half-off bottle service, and of course, the best jazz in So Cal. Socialize in the smoking corridor or head off to the white Autumn Leaves room, with white suede chaise lounges and saxophones enclosed in glass wall cases. Just make sure you try the lobster mac & cheese. Hush is located at 6533 Hollywood Blvd. Call (323) 871-8634 for reservations, which I highly recommend. Click the title link for the website. Ciao

Swimming With The Dead At The Roosevelt

A slew of young celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson, reportedly swam in a pool that had not been drained after a dead body was found in it. The body of 30-year-old Jordan Nagler was found at the bottom of Roosevelt Hotel's Tropicana Bar pool by hotel staff on October 13th. Apparently, the pool was never drained after the body was removed! A source claims that hotel management felt “there was enough chlorine in it to kill the bacteria” and that the staff was told not to "say anything to anyone". The Roosevelt Hotel, located in the heart of Hollywood, has been the hangout for young trendy celebrities from the late Marilyn Monroe to Lil' Kim. This can't be good press for Good Ol' Rosie.

Chef Greenburg presents a menu using ingredients from the Santa Monica farmer's markets combined with unique ingredients from around the world. Try the steak tartar and beef capriccio with crispy capers and truffle-grilled cheese. There's a wide array of specialty cocktails. The cucumber squeeze will definitely tickle your fancy. Grab a cozy curtained cabana in either the lounge or restaurant for a more private setting. But remember they're available on a first come, first served basis. Sttttrrrrrikkkke!

Lucky Strike lounge and bowling alley (whether you like it or not) is the premiere bowling alley, club, lounge, pool hall, bar, restaurant in Los Angeles. Dine in or wait for friends at the bar, battle nice strangers to the best 2 out of 3 games in pool, or get your elderly shoes and get to it. Experience the energy of the DJ, and exchange winks with the 21+ attractive crowd all while your boo rolls a gutter ball.
I know, I know...the Hollywood location is really congested. But, some of us like congestion and traffic and just looove to be in the scene, plus the Renaissance hotel is conveniently located a couple skips away...just in case...well...who needs a reason? Feeling private or have a fugly date? Have no fear. There's a newer location in Torrance that is a lot less of a hassle on weekends, but the dress code is the same - club rules apply. And if you look like the rowdy type...forgetaboutit. Also, take the time to peruse the art which is showcased online and near the lanes. If you wanna impress your friends (and me), live a little and rent the place out, click the title link for contact info.

Bestest Comedians in the World @ Comedy Store?

Chris Spencer is hosting Tuesday nights @ the Comedy Store. I think I like this place the best, by far the most professional of the comedy spots. And, this is definitely a pit stop for the most well-known comedians of our time. 2 drink minimum...I hate that. I mean I know I'll have 2, but I hate to be forced, hate to be restricted. I might want to have 1 there, and walk across the street to the House of Blues and have another. With their plan, I'm done before spot#2, and I'm on Sunset at that. I don't need those kind of tickets that stay with me 10 years. *sigh* I know, everyone has got to secure their money for the night, so bring cash and tip nicely. Doors open @ 8:30pm. Little Door, or Little Next Door- Your Choice

First date? Out-of-towners? L.A.'s best romantic restaurant and secret garden features authentic Mediterranean cuisine on 3rd Street, that still receives mixed reviews (maybe they haven't tried the filet mignon, delicious) and a slew of star sightings, oh joy. Little Door enthusiasts claim that everyone deserves to unwind from the city’s buzz, and drink the finest wine-by-the-glass listening to birds chirping as delectable dinners are shared with friends, families or lovers amongst movie stars and luminaries of the world under the Southern California open sky. Let me know what you think, but I'm all about the ambience, the scenery and the whole idea or concept surrounding the entree.
I love when a restaurant goes the extra mile to sell the European paradise and the perfect picture backdrops are endless. There's even setting options; Piano Room, Winter Garden, Blue Room or the patio. In a rush? Opt for coffee and dessert nibblers at Little Next Door, conveniently located....next door.

Roof Top Weekend Barbeque @ The Peninsula

The Peninsula's rooftop restaurant is the place to be on the weekends. It has its own menu separate from The Belvedere downstairs, a full bar of countless specialty cocktails, and a beautiful poolside scene. Lounge on sleek custom-made furniture while a vertical garden wall separates the bar/restaurant from the hotel-guests-only pool deck. And while going barefoot isn't encouraged, the limestone flooring remains heated for chilly nights. The Peninsula has a three-course barbecue every weekend for $55. Begin with three varieties of salads, watch your entree prepare on the outdoor grill, and enjoy a fabulous dessert. Try the speckled jalapeno margarita. It is served on the rocks and has a definite kick. The pomegranate mojito has a clean taste of mint without any of the residue ( I hate the pulp). Parking meters are all over the neighborhood, but if you prefer valet, it's $8 for first two hours and $2 for every 30 minutes afterward with validation. The weekend bbq is served from 4pm to 9pm. The Bungalow Club...Happy Mondays!

Ok, after waiting long enough, I will finally give up one of my Sunday afternoon spots and where I spent New Years Eve (alright...well some of it, lol)... I love the Bungalow Club, and every time I go, I sit somewhere different. Been going here for years, it fits for a first date, birthday parties, mandatory girlfriend chats with martini's (miss you Tammy and Deshawne!), and even for co-workers. The back dining room transforms into a wedding reception dream and upstairs doubles as a private club spot perfect for VIP events, I think they even have a stripper pole, (or I made that up). Try the lamp chop lollipops for only 13 bucks! I usually have the Cajun Alfredo, calamari, oooh or the eggrolls. And you already know I'm a martini gal, and I was forced to try the cucumber martini and fell in love (don't even like cucumbers)...their list is endless. * Cucumber * LemonDrop* Peach * Pear * French * Rain Drop * Sour Apple * Chocolate * Espresso * KeyLime* Their daily happy hour is 4-7pm.
