Ecco Ultra Lounge

Nightclub veterans Danny B and David Stratton's goal to create a green nightspot that minimizes its impact on the environment has found a natural home in the middle of L.A.'s coolest club stretch. Angelenos don't seem to mind that Tokio Lounge was gutted to build this eco-friendly space from the ground up, and Planet Green has already put in their stake by documenting the entire transformation for an Adrian Grenier-hosted episode of "Alter Eco." But why watch on TV what you can visit in real life? Proving that energy-efficient design doesn't mean style-deficient, the spacious lounge has everything from a multi-colored LED lighting system to recycled steel air pressure toilets and, um, waterless urinals.

Mike's Deli has been around for quite some time, but I just got hip to it a couple of years ago. They have a great selection of fine meats and cheeses, at grocery store prices, and an efficient operation. Mike's deli doesn't try to do anything too fancy to convince you its a "New York" deli, they just bring a sandwich that is a full meal in itself. Pastrami on Rye, hot is excellent. Kaiten Sushi at Luckyfish

Luckyfish brings a contemporary spin on the classic Kaiten Sushi that has been in existence since the early 60's in Japan. Katien Sushi is sushi served on a moving conveyor belt that passes by both the kitchen and by all seats, within the restaurant. Guests determine exactly when and how much they eat! Hot food items may be ordered either directly from the Chefs or Servers. I was a bit concerned about the freshness of the food, but I was pleased to find out that the belt automatically discharges any plate that has been rotating for longer than 60 minutes. Menu highlights include traditional sushi, sashimi and rolls, and dishes like seven-pepper calamari, rock shrimp tempura, and seabass teriyaki. 101 Freeway Shooting, Bentley Riddled with Bullets...

Police are still trying to determine who shot a man driving a Bentley this morning on the northbound 101 Freeway, leaving the victim in critical condition and jamming traffic during the morning commute and beyond. All lanes of the northbound 101 Freeway and the Interstate 5 and Interstate 10 connectors were reopened by 11:43 a.m. after being closed for nearly eight hours while authorities conducted an investigation. Police found the driver slumped over his steering wheel with gunshot wounds about 3:30 a.m. near the Aliso Street exit. There were multiple bullet holes in the passenger door and window of the Bentley. Police said the shots probably were fired from another car. Detectives found several bullet casings along the freeway, near the Mission Road exit. There were no known witnesses to the shooting, but motorists did stop to aid the driver after he struck the median, thinking he was a drunk driver. No weapon, illicit drugs or other illegal items were found in the car, and detectives were trying to determine whether the shooting was related to drugs, gangs or road rage. No More PET LOVE @ Beverly Center

For 15 years, Pet Love has been a fixture in the busy Beverly Center mall, its brightly lighted interior showcasing furry puppies for sale behind glass-walled kennels. But for the last six months, the sixth-floor pet store has been targeted by the Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal rescue and welfare organization that is waging a campaign to get Los Angeles pet shops to stop selling animals born in what the group calls inhumane puppy mills, LA Times reports.

On Tuesday, it appeared that pressure from the group was forcing Pet Love to leave the upscale mall. At a news conference near the mall Tuesday, Best Friends official Elizabeth Oreck said that the Beverly Center would terminate the lease of Pet Love at the end of January.

Best Friends officials charge that Pet Love's puppies come from puppy mills -- factory-like settings where animals are bred too frequently, are poorly cared for, and are allowed to grow sick. Most animal welfare groups, including the Humane Society of the United States, contend that the vast majority of pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills.

Aint Nothing Like That Southern Charm

Okay, so maybe not rush because I never run to be honest. But walk swiftly to Rush Street’s bar and lounge in the heart of Downtown Culver City’s nightlife. Rush Street faces Washington Blvd and can be recognized by its signature extensive outdoor patio and rustic Chicago-esque feel. So, because the only thing I love more than L.A. are the people in it, I’ll give you the pros AND cons of dragging your party of 5 down there. With a pretty hot dj and the city’s only rooftop patio, you can groove indoor and outdoor. Also, the Upstairs has its own bar and private back room available for events and private parties. More? There is also a stripper pole for random play attached to the floor of the lounge area of the Upstairs (amateur strippers need not apply). And for the clencher…, there is absolutely and I mean absolutely NOOOO parking issues. Now if you’re anything like me, this alone would have sold me. Aren’t you tired of playing Russian roulette with your car- parking it in overpriced Hollywood or Downtown parking lots just to get a piece of the night life and maybe even a chocolate martini?? Aren’t you just as cynical as me and wished you had a small video camera in your car hoping that you’ll catch valet slipping and stealing change from your ash tray? Park like a normal person at one of the plethora of meters that has free parking after 6pm (no district permit required). Need I continue? You can currently submit your information to be the first to own. Covered by Curbed Los Angeles, the W Hollywood Hotel & Residences celebrated the completion of vertical construction with a topping out ceremony, an event that brought out politicians including Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and City Councilman Eric Garcetti, both of whom mentioned the transportation element (it's above the Red Line) to this mega-development at Hollywood and Vine. At this downtown Los Angeles sushi spot, the fish is always fresh and the rolls are bountiful. Takumi Restaurant boasts a wide selection of reasonably priced handrolls and various Japanese appetizers with the quality and service of any upscale sushi bar. The new downtown Sushi spot is open and the specials makes Takumi Restaurant a great choice for a business lunch or after work get-together. This black-white-and-red restaurant offers passers-by a hip dining space with red window panels, zebra wood chairs, dark wood floors and modern paintings. They serve upscale Japanese fare with clever twists, including thick yellowtail carpaccio with jalapeno peppers, a tuna margarita served in a large martini glass with spicy avocado cream and deep fried spicy tuna tempura. Detailed by our downtown bloggers, the L.A. Live complex is abuzz this week, with restaurant openings, a GRAMMY nomination show, the unveiling of the GRAMMY Museum and the holiday show kickoff. The rumor around South Park is that Britney Spears will be on hand to kick off "Light of the Angels," L.A. Live's holiday multi-media show, on Thursday, 12/4/8. Each hour on the hour from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the Christmas season, "Light of the Angels" plays its seven-minute program, harnessing the power of more than 1 million lights to create a spectacle of light and music in the L.A. Live courtyard. UPDATE: The press release for tonight's event says a "SURPRISE CELEBRITY SUPERSTAR" will be appearing, along with USC football coach Pete Carroll, Adam Carolla and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Hmm, wondering if this surprise guest is Britney Spears? Spears' rumored appearance would make perfect sense. The singer is getting set to kick off a tour produced by AEG Live, the giant company's live entertainment arm. That tour kicks off in March of 2009. Yaay!

Metrolink Trains Scrape each other, Rialto

Reported by L.A.Times, a Metrolink train and a freight train scraped each other around noon today in Rialto, but no serious injuries were immediately reported. The Metrolink train, number 306, was going east, leaving Union Station for San Bernardino. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train was going west, crossing in the area of Lilac Avenue. "No matter what happened it's not acceptable," said Keith Millhouse, the vice president of the Metrolink Board and a Moorpark City Councilman. "We'll have to figure this out. I have a zero tolerance for any type of incident, no matter how minor it is." So far, the Rialto Police Dept. says, there are "no major injuries." Five of the 15 people on the Metrolink train say they're in pain and paramedics are attending to them.

UPDATE: The two trains collided in an area of single track just west of the Metrolink station in Rialto. The westbound Burlington Northern-Santa Fe freight train was pulling onto a siding when the eastbound Metrolink train hit the tail end of the freight train, said BNSF spokesperson Lena Kent. “We were cleared to go into the siding,” Kent said. “It had almost cleared the mainline when it was struck.” Kent did not know whether the freight train had been cleared by a signal or dispatcher.

It seems that there are many uncertainties surrounding this incident. Please be cautious and hope and pray that these types of accidents will cease.

Fairly new to Koreatown is HAUS, the all-dessert boutique. I passed by this past Wednesday and the place was packed, inside and out. Inside are tables and big stylish sofas, where dessert fans can indulge on chocolate soufflé, passion fruit-mango cake and apricot crème brulée tart, along with an assortment of teas and coffees, all while listening to the sounds of Chingy and Lupe Fiasco. There's plenty of patio seating outside, and one of the tables features its own fire pit. Valet parking is also available. But the best attribute Haus has to offer is the service buzzer attached to every table, which has three buttons: "Call," "Water" and "Bill." You won't get much service unless you use it. When you're ready to order, hit "Call" and a waiter comes directly to the table. Want water? Push the button and the next thing you know you have a glass of water in hand. Ready for the bill? Hit "Bill" and you're on your way. I think I need a few of these magic buttons in my life.

Competing cleavage, dueling diamonds, and battling bouffants are evidence of rumors that tensions were high between the two sisters. Joan, right, had signed a multimillion-dollar book deal with Jackie's publisher. "Jackie was the Queen of Dish, and Joan was the Queen of Soap. I'm addicted. It really is tough trying to find a eating place that actually prepares fresh, made-to-order dishes, fast! House of Taco, or what I call the "Taconologists," an authentic Mexican food restaurant, specializes in the art of making tacos. Their Chicken, Ground Beef, Carne Asada, Pork, or my favorite, the hard shell Shrimp Tacos are fantastic. Not sure if its the seasonings, the freshness, the produce, the homemade salsa or the welcome greeting that keeps me coming back for more. Also specializing in wet burritos, pupusas, mini tacos, classic combination plates...and the list goes on. Rain, Wind (crazy lately), or Shine, look for me. Bottle Rock is a combination wine retailer, tasting room, and small plates cafe, with over 800 wines from around the world, as well as beer and sake. Bottle Rock offers artisanal cheese, charcuterie (meat), and gourmet chocolate plates. They also have a (very) small plates menu, including bruscetta, mozzarella caprese, and my favorite, the petite lollipop chops. (Beware, if you are hungry, please get a real bite to eat before heading to Bottle Rock. They aren't called a small plates cafe for nothing!) Bottle Rock is a bit pricey, but it's definitely a great place to go hang out with friends and chat over a glass of wine or frosty mug of beer on a Friday night. Try the $18 a glass Bardessono Vineyard Cabernet. It's one of the smoothest cabs I've ever tasted. STAY in a bubble HOTEL, Downtown L.A.

In our latest news, Downtown's new Stay hotel continues its inauguration this month with a novel publicity stunt that has come with a few twists. In an effort to promote the budget hotel/youth hostel hybrid, a group of young guests are currently living in two ground-level rooms with storefront windows. The guests (three men in one room, one woman in the other) will be fully visible from the sidewalk throughout the day and into the night for passersby to gawk at until Nov. 18. The Stay hotel is carved out of the decidedly less glamorous Cecil Hotel (the hotels have separate entrances). Since a group of partners bought the property last year, the owners have been performing a series of upgrades on the 80-year-old hotel, which for many years was a magnet for drugs and prostitution but also served low-income residents. The efforts have been cheered by some downtown boosters, but some advocates for the poor worry about longtime low-income residents being pushed out. The guests - Alicia Baker, 27; Casey Nelson, 25; Toby Glass, 24; and Zac Morris, 21 - all models or actors, found the job via an ad on Craigslist. The guests seem to take a laidback approach to the 20-day gig, which will earn them $500 and, they hope, some exposure. "I'm prone to doing fun, strange things," said Morris, explaining why he wanted the job. The others echoed his "why not?" approach. Goofing off, blogging and making short videos chronicling their stint for the promotional website stayinabubble.com help fill the days inside the display rooms. The guests-for-hire may come and go during the day, though one person must be in each room at all times. Each also has a regular, upstairs room at Stay, which most of them sleep in during the late night to early morning hours. And the winner is...(drum roll, please)... BRAVO BISTRO!! (and the crowd roars!!!)

I just can not resist the kosher hot dog at Bravo, even while I'm trying to lose a few pounds for bikini season. I often head over there on my lunch break, although it's definitely not part of my low-carb diet. But for what it's worth, I do get a salad instead of the fries. ;) Bravo Bistro has a pretty expansive bar for such a small place. I'm often tempted to order a keir royale, but I couldn't possibly go back to work tipsy, now could I? Happy Hour is Mon-Thurs 5:30-7:30 and Fri-Sat 5:30-7 and 11pm-12am. Maybe I will go for that keir royale AFTER work one day. ;)

Maison Martin Margiela, a True Gem Inside and Out

I was first drawn to this Beverly Hills boutique by the thousands of shiny plastic sequins covering the store. It was just so sparkly and pretty. But the true gem is what's inside.

L.A. Times best describes it as: “a treat, a temple to the avant-garde in a former church. The white carpet inside the front door is intentionally soiled with footprints leading to a pyramid of champagne glasses displaying Margiela’s famous split-toe Tabi boots and shoes. This accessories area is bordered by a row of chairs pushed together and encased in a single white slipcover. Paris-based interior designer Eduardo Dente created the space, which opens into a large selling floor, photo-printed to look like hardwood. There are trompe l’oeil moldings on the walls, and a TV monitor flickers with the latest runway show.”

You will also find tailored classics, the limited-edition handmade Artisanal line, and white-coated Margiela staff.

Martin Margiela, who took over the women's ready to wear at Hermes in 1996 before his line was bought by Diesel, continues his influential career and international development while presenting his Haute Couture line in Paris.

5 Found Slain Near 405 Freeway

Reported today in the L.A. Times, Five people were found shot to death early Sunday in a makeshift homeless encampment covered by thick brush near the 405 Freeway in Long Beach, police said.The crime upset neighbors and puzzled police, who had no suspects and struggled to comb the rugged terrain surrounding the crime scene near the freeway's intersection with the 710 Freeway. An anonymous caller tipped authorities Sunday morning about a slaying in an area near the 1500 block of West Wardlow Road. When Long Beach police arrived, they found two women and three men dead, some with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.One problem for investigators has been the encampment's terrain, which is tough to navigate because of heavy brush that was muddied by overnight rains. The vegetation is so thick that the encampment cannot be seen from a helicopter.

The homicides came three weeks after a homeless man was doused with gasoline and burned to death in a high-profile killing near 3rd and Berendo streets in L.A. that outraged his neighbors. The crime spree on our homeless is senseless, reach out to your loved ones.

A modern hacienda in Mar Vista, is

listed as L.A. Times' Home of the Week. Artist Nancy Louise Jones and her husband, entertainment executive John Richard Diaz, bought a 1,000-square-foot tear-down in Mar Vista five years ago, they didn't know that they would transform the property into this ancient-Mexican/Modernist fusion of architecture. The hacienda, where they "work, live and play," was designed by the late artist and architect J. Frank Fitzgibbons. The enclosed compound, dubbed Casa Moderna, includes 3 bedrooms, 4 1/2 baths, a great room; a large, high-ceilinged artist studio; an office with a full bath and steam shower; a side yard for entertaining; and a large backyard with drought-tolerant landscaping. Around 16,000 sq feet of mingling and business space, the interior is saturated by natural light, and is painted in bold colors including marigold and cobalt blue. I think I can get alot of work and play done in this flat, I'm proposing this to be the new L.A. Etc work-play-blog-quarters...one of 'em at least. This casa is listed at 3.995 million.

October 2008 has become Los Angeles' hottest in history. Because of the heat-trapping effects of urban development and global warming, L.A. has been getting progressively warmer. Entering this week, the average had been 84.3 and the National Weather Service was forecasting cooler days. But instead, it just got hotter: 94 degrees on Tuesday, 90 on Wednesday and 84 on Thursday. By 11:47 a.m. today, downtown had hit 81 degrees. It's almost November...I should be breaking out the scarf, not the bikini.

Carleton Watkins at The Getty

Anyone that really knows Kandyce with a K knows that I love museums, aquariums, plays, etc. So now that the fires are contained, I'm planning on heading over to the Getty Museum for one of their newest exhibits, Dialogue among Giants: Carleton Watkins and the Rise of Photography in California.
Carleton Watkins, a South American native, lived a life of photography that is key to California history. The photographs he left behind display his personal vision of the birth and growth of California. Watkins is best known for his photographs of nature in Yosemite as well as the Pacific Coast. Watkins photographed the Monterey Peninsula in the 1880s, recording the continuously unfolding progression of the scenery along Seventeen-Mile Drive, which began and ended at the Hotel Del Monte. Near the hotel, Watkins created this image of a native cypress—windblown and with its roots exposed—clinging to the side of a rocky cliff.

OK, so Blue on Blue at The Avalon isn't really haunted, but they are offering some hauntingly good drinks to celebrate Halloween like the Massacre Martini made with vodka, Kahlua, butterscotch schnapps, whipped cream topping, and raspberry puree drizzle to give the “bloody” effect. Not to mention the Green Goblin made with Van Gogh chocolate vodka, Godiva white chocolate and green creme menthe. Yum!

The Blue on Blue bar is a popular, yet low-key, Beverly Hills poolside hangout that offers daily flavors of martinis as well as the popular favorites: The Blue Avalon, The Librarian's Martini, The Sex Kitten (*meow*), The Key Lime Pie, and A Walk in Space. Poolside cabanas with privacy curtains (*wink*) are available by reservation; three are for dining and three for cocktails. Book at least three weeks in advance.

Miguel will be performing live beginning at 9pm. There is a $5 cover charge. Unfortunately, the 1/2 off bottle service and $3 martinis was only for Prohibition Live Jazz Sundays. The Game was scheduled to perform alongside Musiq and Ice Cube at the BET Hip Hop Awards filmed in Atlanta which aired last night. He missed his performance because his sister, up and coming rapper B-Fly, was shot during a drive-by. B-Fly was grazed by a bullet as she stood on the porch of her Compton home on October 14th. Word is that she will be ok, but The Game still chose to skip the awards to be with his fam.

B-Fly had this to say on her Myspace page: "...I truly believe in God!!! He has granted me another day at life, another day to love, another day to breathe, another day to bounce back, and another day to praise Him for life....I had so much to complain about until this brush with death surfaced but now I know that everything in my life has its purpose and place...“Death is more universal than life; everyone dies but not everyone lives.”

...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes. This is my wish for you: Comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence for when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth, love to complete your life.
